Welcome to Rio

The Village of Rio was first laid out and platted in 1864.  A hotel was erected on the first lot purchased and was named the Rio House.  From these roots the Village of Rio has grown into is a small, friendly community in the heart of Columbia County farm country.  Rio is also located on State Highway 16 midway between Columbus and Portage.  Also located near the Wisconsin River, Rio is situated just inside the unglaciated area of the state.  This region is rich in lakes and wooded areas that provide opportunities for outdoor activities.  Several campgrounds in the area offer excellent getaways!

An active business community provides local shopping and entertainment for citizens and visitors, alike.  The local Fire Department owns and manages a large park facility within the village that includes football, baseball and volleyball facilities for family enjoyment, plus a variety of playground equipment available for younger children.  Rio also offers a private airstrip for small aircraft.

The facilities of the local school district (kindergarten thru 12th grade) are located entirely within the village and include a new library, auditorium and gymnasium facilities.  A large, new library facility was erected in 1996.  Churches include the Catholic, Lutheran, Assembly of God, Congregational, and Jehovah's Witness.

Oh…and here is a tip for visitors.  If you want to sound like a local…the name of this Wisconsin village is pronounced like the grain (Rye-Oh).  It is not spoken using the Spanish pronunciation for river (Ree-Oh, as in Rio Grande).
