President Van Buren commissioned a party of 45 men, including August Bird, to build a state capitol in Madison. The group of men left Milwaukee on May 26, 1837 and traveled for days in the rain. On June 9, the group emerged at the edge of the prairie and with the sun shining, carved the words 'Sun Prairie" into a tree. Charles Bird returned to the area 2 years later and became the first settler.
Sun Prairie's location offers the best in small city life and the advantages of the thriving metropolis. Providing quick access to Madison, US Highway 151 has three interchanges to Sun Prairie. Interstate 90-94 is met just outside Sun Prairie.
Sun Prairie is served by the Dane County
Regional Airport located 10 minutes from the city. Many commercial airlines and
two private companies service the airport.
Sun Prairie has emphasized diversified growth as evidenced by the healthy mix of
commercial, residential and industrial development. In the past four years,
approximately $150 million has been spent on construction This includes
construction of nearly 500 single family homes.
The city is well known for its high-quality educational system. Approximately
5,000 children attend the senior high, two middle schools, five elementary
schools and the three parochial schools. The Sun Prairie Area School District
provides a full range of instruction from special education to a talented and
gifted program.
Sun Prairie is a recreation lover's paradise with a park system consisting of 30
parks covering almost 400 acres. Special attractions include more than 13 ball
diamonds, 11 outdoor skating rinks, two sledding hills and four soccer fields.
The Family Aquatic Center features a zero depth swimming pool, waterslides and
sand play area. The Youth Baseball Complex opened in 1996, and is home to the
Parks and Recreation daytime baseball and softball programs, as well as Sun
Prairie's Little League program. Recent additions to Sun Prairie's recreational
opportunities have been unique with both the Municipal Pet Exercise Area and the
Skateboard Park. Further opportunities such as golf, bowling, midget auto
racing, soccer and indoor hockey are provided by private organizations. Prairie
Athletic Club and the Civic Theatre are also popular attractions. The Colonial
Club Senior Center offers a variety of educational and recreational activities
for people age 55 and older.
