Brandon is a small village in Fond du Lac County Wisconsin, about 20 miles southwest of the city of Fond du Lac. The village had a population of 872 in the 1990 census. It is a quiet little town, which was founded in 1845. Wisconsin was wheat country in those days and the need for a rail line became great enough for the Milwaukee road to lay a line through Brandon to Ripon. The town was called Bungtown or Bunggo. This name came about because, although there were many springs in the village, the water had a sulphur taste. Drinking water for the railroad workers had to be shipped here in barrels or casks. The workers would drink by removing the stopper or bung, as it was called, from the side of the barrel. |

The custom gave rise to the name Bungtown. The railroad meant progress and eventually there were grain elevators, lumber yards, a jewelry store, two hotels, a millinery shop, shoe repair, livery, a meat market and doctors and dentists. Easterners from New England began moving to the town and renamed it. A group of English families from Brandon Vermont chose the present name. A petition to have the village incorporated was proposed in 1877. The final vote to incorporate the village was successful in 1878.
Today, Brandon remains a small town where neighbors know one another, and everything in town is within walking distance. The village has a volunteer fire department, a police department, public works department, a library, and a village park. The thirty acre village park has baseball diamonds, tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts, horseshoe pits, and a 2 1/2 acre pond. People of all ages enjoy fishing here. The park also features a ten acre nature trail. Two picnic shelters are available.
