Grand River Marsh

A Little Piece of Heaven!

The Grand River Marsh is home to thousands of ducks and geese, a waterfowl hunter’s dream!  Surrounded by County Highway B on the south side and County H on the east end in western Green Lake County, the Grand River Wildlife Area encompasses more than 7,000 acres of marsh.

The Department of Natural Resources personnel control the water level of the river dam through an extensive dike system located on the river. At sunrise, geese fly out of the refuge area to feed in nearby cornfields and return to their nesting area at night.  Hunters have the opportunity to either pass shoot as geese fly overhead or gain permission to set up decoys in the fields.

Abundant wildlife, white-tailed deer, squirrels, rabbits and pheasants have found suitable habitat in the upland woods and farmland.  Every year, the DNR stocks ringnecks within the many miles of switch grass and native plants, making for an exciting hunting. Other species that take advantage of the habitat are songbirds.  They nest in the upland while marsh birds use the cattails and sedge grasses in the marsh.  Thousands of sandhill cranes use the area each spring and fall, making the Grand River Marsh and areas birdwatcher’s delight.
