5,500 Acres of Fine Fishing!
|
The Fox River gracefully snakes its way into Green
Lake County from nearby Marquette. Here it widens and forms a
shallow, fish-filled lake called Puckaway. This 5,500 acre lake now
provides many hours of fishing, boating, swimming, skiing and sailing. |
|
Not too long ago, Puckaway was declared "dead" by those who
like to fish. Puckaway has bounced back to become one of south-central
Wisconsin's hottest fishing lakes-- thanks to intensive rehabilitation programs
carried out by the Lake Puckaway Protection and Rehabilitation Association and
the Department of Natural Resources. The last few years have been the best
fishing that Lake Puckaway has seen in decades and it promises to keep getting
better!
Although the lake is mostly open water,
aquatic vegetation is growing in many areas of the lake. The weeds provide
excellent cover for northern pike, largemouth bass, yellow perch, crappies,
bluegills, and walleyes. The lake is also home to both channel and
flathead catfish.
Giant northern pike are the favorite of
many anglers and Puckaway boasts the state record for that species, 38-pound
monster! Come join the fun!

Once the lake is frozen, the fishing continues!
Although the best walleye, perch, and crappie fishing is often after first ice
and then again toward spring, anglers catch lot of fish throughout the winter
from Lake Puckaway.
While Puckaway provides for excellent
fishing, the lake is also attracting a lot of waterfowl hunters. Thousands of
ducks and geese return each spring & fall to the Puckaway Marsh as well as the
Grand River Marsh. They found this to be a great place to raise a brood, or rest
and feed during their migrations.
