In 1836, Marquette, the third oldest settlement in the State of Wisconsin, was established.  Today, the charming shops of Marquette offer a variety of merchandise for their many visitors.  When hunger strikes, burgers, steaks and our famous Wisconsin fish fries are ready to satisfy your appetite.

Residents and visitors alike enjoy Lake Puckaway year round for boating, fishing and an occasional dip. Marquette is nestled on the southern shore of this beautiful lake, our valuable recreational resource.  Lake Puckaway is approximately eight mile long and two miles wide, covering approximately 5,400 acres. This paradise lake is the seventh largest in the state of Wisconsin. It marks an excellent spot for your sporting vacation!  Lake Puckaway offers bays, island, weedbeds and plenty of open water for your fishing and boating enjoyment.  Lodges, bait shops and guide services are available.  Yellow perch, bluegills, walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass and hybrid muskies are just waiting for your bait to hit the water!  Come and experience the excitement of Lake Puckaway!

The Grand River Wildlife and Recreation Area is 7,000 acres of pure heaven for naturalist and sportsmen alike!

The Grand River Marsh is located just south of Lake Puckaway and west of Marquette.  Managed as a waterfowl restoration area, about 3,5000 acres are flooded, creating an ideal habitat for waterfowl.  White-tailed deer, gadwell, widgeon, teal, and mallards are aplenty for your avid wildlife personality.

Trivia Questions & Answer:

Question:  What Wisconsin community is the third oldest in the state...

Answer:  The Village of Marquette was first plotted in 1836 and is the third oldest community in the State of Wisconsin.  At that time the Village was offered as the seat of government for this section of the Northwest Territory.  Because of its strategic and central location and access to the golden waterway of the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, many thought it would be the ideal spot.  Early organizers actually designed a community large enough for 6000 citizens...a very large community for the early 1800's in this part of the wilderness!  Streets were 60 feet wide and the city blocks were 900 feet long.  This plan dissolved when Marquette lost the honor of being the Capitol by 36 votes!   Earlier, a Mascoutin Indian village occupied the site of the present village.  In 1673 the French explorer Louis Joliet and the Catholic missionary Father Jacques Marquette were the first white men to set foot on this soil.  Father Marquette dedicated a house of worship here for the Indians in that year and thus the seeds for the village were planted.
