One of Montello's most famous natural resources and attractions is its granite! The Montello Granite Company supplied granite to the country and the world beginning about 1880 until sometime in the 1960s. Tests have proved that for durability and strength there are few granites anywhere that can equal the Montello granite. Some of the finest monuments of the country are constructed of Montello granite. Among the more renowned monuments are the Custer monument and monuments to Wisconsin soldiers at Gettysburg and Chickamauga. A special commission sponsored a competition to select the granite which would form the sarcophagi for the General and Mrs. U.S. Grant Monument at Riverside Park, New York.  Montello granite was chosen from amongst companies submitting samples from all over the world!
