Who We Are...

What We Do

The Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum, Inc., a 501(3)(c) nonprofit corporation is dedicated to enhancing an understanding and encouraging an interest and appreciation in the career of Donald Kent "Deke" Slayton, the History of Bicycling, Wisconsin Astronauts, and Aviation in Monroe County.

The Museum was founded in March 1999 by a core group of Monroe County residents who wanted to honor Deke Slayton's memory in his hometown of Sparta, Wisconsin AND commemorate the county's rich bicycling heritage.  The museum is a progression from the earliest patented bicycles to the Wright brothers bicycle shop, the Wright Flyer and into outer space.

These web pages provide a wealth of information on the Museum.  But, we always welcome suggestions and helpful tips.  Please feel free to forward any suggestions or questions you may have to: Info@DekeSlayton.com

Services for Disabled Visitors

The Museum is on the 2nd floor of the Monroe County Museum Complex, and the Complex does not have an elevator.  However, through the generosity of the Monroe County Local History Room on the first floor of the Complex, we are able to narrate  our exhibits during the days and hours that the Monroe County Local History Room is open.
