Baraboo Range

Scenic and History Trip

Back

This tour is designed for use during Spring, Summer and Fall. Do not drive this route during the Winter or when road conditions are slippery, at night or when visibility is poor.

A very scenic day trip featuring the hills and valleys of the Baraboo Range, plus railroad history and natural history.

Visit the Mid-Continental Railway Museum at North Freedom and walk among the restored locomotives and rolling stock, visit the gift shop and even ride the train if you wish! Train schedules available here.

At Rock Springs you will have the opportunity to get free, fresh spring water from a natural spring. Be sure to bring along some empty jugs or bottles to take some spring water with you. Plus, you will see Van Hise Rock, a National Historical Landmark, and then walk in Ableman's Gorge, a State Natural Area, and view the magnificent outcroppings of Baraboo Quartzite.

This tour is very scenic and offers beautiful vistas and panoramas...especially during the Fall colors.

There are a number of quality restaurants serving food and refreshments along the route. Additionally, you will find other shops along the way. A number of these are listed in the written trip directions.

Remember your camera and plenty of film or memory sticks.
